KEY BENEFITS
Treatment of sodic soils depends on many factors such as the amount of sodium present, type of salt, pH, CEC, water quality, etc. The standard treatment has been to use fertilizers containing calcium, including gypsum or calcium chloride on soil of low Ca levels, or sulfuric acid/elemental sulfur on calcitic soils. Calcium is needed for sodium replacement. Sodium in general is detrimental to soils because it destroys soil structure and can affect plant osmotic potential, or disturb cell membrane integrity.
As an essential plant nutrient, calcium stabilizes both the soil and plant cell membranes. Available calcium replaces sodium in the soil. When soil and/or irrigation water becomes high in carbonates and bicarbonates, calcium will have a tendency to precipitate into insoluble calcium carbonate (lime). The calcium in Calcium Complex 12% is formulated to limit precipitation due to its interaction with carbonate or sulfates in the soil solution and/or irrigation water. It will react with the soil, replace sodium or become plant available, especially in sand based soils.
